Comic across the world: American comic

The USA is the second large comic industry around the world.

Compared with Japanese manga, the variety of American comic is much less. Most of them are action comics about superheroes. There are totally more than 7,000 superheros in the American comic history, and most of them (more than 80%!) are created by the two main American superhero comic companies: the DC Comics, the largest comic company in the world, and the Marvel Comics, the second largest comic company.

Founded in 1934 as National Allied Publications, the origin of the DC comics is one of its popular comics named Detective Comic. It owns many well-known superheroes, such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Women and the superhero team Justice League.

The Marvel Comics founded slightly later than the DC Comics, in 1939 as Timely Comics. It has created many famous superheroes as well, like Spider-man, Iron Man, Captain America and the superhero team the Avengers.

Besides these two main comic companies, there are some smaller superheroes companies like the Dark Horse Comics which publishes Star Wars and Hellboy, and the Images Comics which publishes the Walking Dead.

There are some non-superhero comics as well. The Garfield and the Peanuts are probably two of the most popular non-superhero comics. The drawing style of this type of comics is more “soft” and “childish” compared with the superhero comics.

No matter it’s superhero or not, one thing can be sure is that once the comic become popular in the America locally, there is a high possibility of them to be famous among the world.
